Description: Das Projekt "Sub project: Integrated core and log investigations for calibrating a mobile NMR scanner - with a special focus on the Gas Hydrate Leg 204" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von RWTH Aachen University, E.ON Energy Research Center (E.ON ERC) Institute for Applied Geophysics and Geothermal Energy (GGE) durchgeführt. NMR techniques are widely used in the oil industry and are one of the most suitable methods to evaluate in-situ formation porosity and permeability. Recently, efforts are directed towards adapting NMR methods also to ODP and the upcoming IODP program. A mobile NMR corescanner is presently under development... in order to establish a fast and nondestructive method to determine routinely rock porosity and to give estimate on the pore size distribution of ODP cores. First results are strongly encouraging and make evident the need for enhanced petrophysical and geological research. The objectives are to test the suitability of the NMR core scanner for rock types common in ODP, in particular to estimate the free and capillary bound water in the formation. Further goals are to evaluate the precision and the limits of the method and to calibrate the NMR results with a large collection of petrophysical data sets. Investigations will concentrate on Leg 204 (Hydrate Ridge), where NMR logging was performed in ODP for the first time by Logging-While-Drilling (LWD) technology. All drilling and logging operations were highly successful, providing excellent core, wireline, and LWD data from adjacent boreholes. We propose to use this unique opportunity for comparative studies between the NMR core scanner and the NMR logging data. By integrating conventional wireline data and electrical borehole wall images (RAB/FMS) this will end up in a detailed characterization of the sediments in terms of lithology, petrophysics and, fluid flow properties.
