Description: Das Projekt "Geburt und Tod von Seen im Senkungsgraben des Toten Meeres" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie (Otto-Hahn-Institut) durchgeführt. The study is an extension of the previously GIF funded research by the same PI's that dealt primarily with the Lisan Formation of late Pleistocene age. Whereas the stratigraphic sequence, hence the time evolution of Lake Lisan has thus been elucidated, we still have an only vague idea of the spatial development of the Lake, and of the mechanism by which lakes in the Rift Valley were born and disappeared. It centers on the following objectives: a. Evaluate the chemical homogeneity of Lake Lisan in space and time; e.g.: decide whether the Late Pleistocene configuration was that of a single large lake or alternatively of several 'string-lakes'. To this aim a sequence of stratigraphic - geochemical columnar sections will be performed in the central and northern Dead Sea Rift (DSR). b. Examine the transition from the older Samra Fm. into Lisan Fm, and from the Lisan Fm. into the overlaying young ('paleo-Dead-Sea') sediments. The parameters studied will be Sr/Ca, U/Ca and several additional trace metals. c. Extend the radiometric dating beyond the U-series limit to about 500 Ka by developing the U-Pb dating method into this range. In addition we will test the applicability of 226Ra as a very young geochronometer. The establishment of a detailed record of young paleo-lakes in the DSR will provide us with a better understanding of continental Quaternary climates in this part of the world.
