Description: Das Projekt "Exzellenzcluster 80 (EXC): Ozean der Zukunft" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel (GEOMAR), Forschungsbereich 3: Marine Ökologie, Forschungseinheit Experimentelle Ökologie durchgeführt. The most sensitive phase in the life history of most organisms lies in early ontogeny. The sheer number of differentiation and growth processes in spores and larvae ('propagules') increases their susceptibility to environmental stress since the failure of a single one of these usually jeopardizes survival. Additionally, these small stages are usually vulnerable to a larger array of consumers than after passing a certain size threshold. Consequently, mortality during early life stages often exceeds 90% (Gosselin & Qian 1997). Climate change can be expected to impact propagule survival in several ways. When environmental variables like temperature, salinity or acidity shift out of the range local species have adapted to, these will experience physiological stress. In this project we ask how warming and acidification affect (i) growth and shell characteristics of barnacles and mussels, (ii) the predation pressure by snails and juvenile crabs and starfish on freshly settled juveniles of barnacles and mussels, (iii) the competitive dynamics between barnacles and mussels, (iv) the physiological underpinning of performance in barnacles and mussels.
