Description: Das Projekt "SAPALDIA Schweizerische Studie ueber Luftverunreinigung und Lungenkrankheiten bei Erwachsenen" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Basel, Institut für Sozial- und Präventivmedizin durchgeführt. The Swiss Study on Air Pollution and Lung Diseases in Adults (SAPALDIA) is investigating the relationship between long-term exposure to air pollution and chronic respiratory and allergic diseases in a one-year cross-sectional survey (1991) with a two-year follow-up (1992/93). SAPALDIA will determine the influence of the environmental conditions i.e. air pollution, meteorological factors and pollen on the prevalence and evolution of these diseases. A random sample of 2500 persons (age 18-60, residents for three years or more) was drawn from the population registry in each of eight Swiss regions with different environmental characteristics. Health measurement in the initial cross-sectional stage consists of a standardised questionnaire (interview), skin allergy-testing (Phazet R), in vitro allergy test (total IgE, Phadiatop R), forced expiratory lung function (FVC, FEVI, PEF, FEF75 Prozent, FEF50 Prozent, FEF25 Prozent, FEF25-75 Prozent), methacholine bronchial challenge and measurement of the endexpiratory CO-fraction. Based on the results of the cross-sectional study five cohorts will be defined; these will be followed over two years with a symptoms diary, daily peakflow measurements and interval questionnaires. The minimum standard in exposure assessment for each centre consists of air pollution monitoring stations (NO2, SO2, O3, TSP, acid aerosols), meteorological stations (temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, sunshine, precipitation) and pollen counting stations.
