Description: Das Projekt "Das Klima des 21. Jahrhunderts" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie durchgeführt. The principal goal of the project is to model global climate change and variability on time scales from a month to several hundred years, with particular emphasis on man-induced climate change in the next century. The project addresses both anthropogenic climate change and natural climate variability. The two problems are strongly interrelated as (a) the socio-economic impact of anthropogenic modifications of natural climate variability are at least as important as the changes in the mean climate fields and (b) an understanding of natural climate variability is essential for the early detection of an anthropogenic climate signal. Most of the simulation experiments will be carried out using three-dimensional general circulation models of the atmosphere and ocean. The project is divided into five interrelated. Sub-Projects: 1) TRANSIENT RESPONSE SIMULATION OF ANTHROPOGENIC CLIMATE CHANGE. The time-dependent climate change will be simulated with coupled ocean-atmosphere General Circulation Models for various scenarios describing possible future atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. The results from six modelling groups will be intercompared. 2) SHORT TIME SCALE CLIMATE VARIABILITY. The causes and predictability of natural climate variability will be investigated with coupled O-A-GCMs. A major theme will be the predictability of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation and the possible modifications of INSO by man's impact on climate. Seventeen laboratories will participate in these investigations. 3) A-GCM EQUILIBRIUM CLIMATE RESPONSE SIMULATIONS AND PARAMETERIZATIONS. ...
