Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz, Hochschule für Life Sciences, Institut für Ecopreneurship.In the following a collaborative research study of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Engineering of Inorganic Compounds and Environment from 'Politehnica' University of Timisoara (UPT) in Romania and the Institute for Ecopreneurship of the School of Life Sciences, University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) is proposed. The research study will develop a comprehensive framework for Romania to assess the wastewater discharge impacts on receiving water bodies and validate the framework in the BEGA-TIMIS river sub-basin (Romania). In this catchment area there are substantial pollution point sources, e.g. municipal wastewater treatment plants, as well as non-point sources, e.g. from agriculture. The goal is to develop a methodology for the optimal selection and implementation schedule of water pollution control measures under uncertainty in a consistent Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) framework. The main drivers and resulting pressures will be identified and characterised with indicators based analysis, overall environmental objectives will be clarified with stakeholder analysis including a willingness to pay/accept-approach, state and impacts in the main rivers will be assessed and modelled. Eco-efficient measures (technologies, operational and organisational options) to improve the situation will be identified with a multi-criteria analysis methodology. This combination is new as in general the focus has been on the deployment of technical systems and not comprehensively analysing the situation using a consistent DPSIR framework in combination with stakeholder involvement and uncertainty analysis. Purely technology driven decisions were therefore often not leading to timely and sustainable implementation of efficient measures. To achieve the goal of the research study the following work packages will be completed: - Methodology development - Analysis of pollution sources, status and performance of the current wastewater treatment; - Risks and impacts of the current and future emissions on the environment; - Identification of eco-efficient environmental measures and technologies; - Stakeholder analysis, information and capacity building; - Dissemination of research results. Both partners have a large experience in water quality analysis, monitoring and wastewater treatment technologies. Swiss partners have additional experience in river basin analysis and modelling. Both institutes have been and are currently involved in national as well as international research in this field. As Romania will have to improve the status of the water bodies by 2015 according to the European water framework directive, this project will allow research on major contemporary issues, including improvement of the overall life quality of the local population. Furthermore will this project foster knowledge transfer between Romanian and Swiss partners and increase research and teaching capacities.
