Description: Das Projekt "Integriertes kleines Wasserkraftwerk und Steuerungssystem fuer den Elektrizitaetsbedarf" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Gemeindewerke Unterkirnach GmbH & Co. KG durchgeführt. Objective: To reduce demand for energy from grid, by smoothing out widely varying demand curve, and to ensure water economic operation of small-hydro plant to maintain water flow rates in river. General Information: A new dam wall retains 20,000 m3 of water from the river Kirnach, but a fish pass ensures freedom of access for aquatic life. A 1000 m long, 1 m diameter penstock conveys water to a newly constructed power house. Hydraulic details: head 24. 5 m flow 1. 2 m3/s turbine Francis Electrical details: rating 250 kw voltage 415 v type Asynchronous The load demand curve is smoothed by shedding or adding non -priority loads such as heating, dependant on the total demand for power. The load is controlled and monitored from the power house, by remote control signals transmitted over the low voltage distribution system at 383 Hz. Minimum flow of water in the river Kirnach is preserved by the incorporation of water level and turbine flow information into the control system. In times of high electrical demand and low water availibility, additional power is taken from the electricity supply. Water economy, or power production may be selected as the priority mode of operation. Achievements: The installation was completed and commissioned in March 1985, and performed to expectations. The demonstration period ended in March 1986, with a significant smoothing of the demand curve of the community. Despite an increase of 16 per cent in the actual demand for electricity, the power taken from the local grid has been reduced at times by up to 1130 kw. The demand on grid power and on non renewable energy sources has been reduced as a result. The cost of power produced (including a 12. 5 per cent increase in capital costs) is above the rate charged for grid electricity. The commercial sale of energy produced is unlikely. A 20 per cent reduction in capital costs was forecast for replicated schemes.
