Description: Das Projekt "Verbesserung der Energieeffizienz von Schiffsantrieben durch eine neuartige Schiffsschraube" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Günther Spranger KG durchgeführt. Objective: Construction and demonstration of a new type of ship propeller improving the propulsion effectiveness by approx. 18 per cent compared to conventional propellers. For ships requiring 1.9 TONS fuel/24 hours and running 275 days/year, it is expected that an energy saving of 600 TOE/year will be obtained. A payback of 2-3 years is expected if commercialized. General Information: The new propeller is characterized by an open fan type blade profile, governing and coordinated differentiated pitch, reducing the energy losses due to friction and turbulence. This is based on the principle of the so called 'split blades' according to which the friction layers of each blade segment are carried away by the external flow thereby increasing propeller efficiency. Although new border layers are produced at the subsequent blade segments, these are only subjected to a small increase of pressure at the corresponding suction side of the profile of the segment. For the purpose of the demonstration, a propeller of this type will be installed on a coastal vessel having a motor of 270 HP. The classification of this ship is 243 register tons. Technical tests and demonstration in real conditions will be undertaken under the control of the DSVA (German Institute of Ship building Research). The investment expenditure of the new propeller will be presumably be 20 per cent higher than the cost of conventional propeller, amounting to approx. DM 100 000 for ferry-boats. Assuming an energy saving of 600 TOE/year and a market fuel price of 220 DM/TOE, this would lead to a payback time of approx. 1 year. (Special materials: G-Cu Zn 35 AL 1+5 per cent Ni).
