Introduction: Organic agriculture methods are putting an emphasis on the holistic view of all farm processes. Therewith a closed farm cycle and adequate production methods are striven for. Plant and animal production should be balanced. Objectives: For the sustainable production it is of essential importance to look at the nutrient flow between the soil, plant, animal and human being. Therefore, the balance of a nutrient cycle is an important criteria for the evaluation of farming systems and a part of the ecological farm analysis. Scientific Progress to date: The data for this study is mainly collected at the demonstration farm of a small farmers cooperative situated in the mid-country of Sri Lanka about 18 km south of Kandy at an elevation of app. 800 mNN with an average annual rainfall of 2600 mm and an average annual temperature of 23 C. At the research side the components tea, fertilizer, animal and fodder should be organized in a well balanced relation in order to maintain a sustainable production system on the small farmers basis. The optimal set up of such a farm is going to be derived from the collected data. Furthermore, the investigations are interpreted to give information for the future development of similar farming systems. In the ongoing research, all farm products being bought, sold and consumed during the research period are accounted from the book keeping. Their nutrient content is analyzed, taken from literature or labels. Furthermore, fodder material, various organic fertilizers, tea leaves and soil samples are analyzed to determine the nutrient content. Animal fodder is also being weight and yield samples taken in order to estimate the on side production and variations within the yearly supply. As far as possible all farm in- and outputs are being measured.
