Large commercial building heating with solar air collectors and comparison with a conventionally heated reference building

Description: Das Projekt "Large commercial building heating with solar air collectors and comparison with a conventionally heated reference building" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Willibald Grammer KG, Solar-Klima-Technik, Werk Immenstetten durchgeführt. Objective: Use of solar energy for air heating of an industrial production hall in W. Germany. The practical experience and thermal results will serve as an instrument for further market penetration. An energy saving of 40 per cent is envisaged compared to reference hall. General Information: On an industrial production hall of a heated floor area of 3,000 m2 and a total volume of 21,450 m3 a solar plant of 450 m2 area is installed. The hall's temperature has to be 18 degree of Celsius. The auxiliary heating is provided by three air heating units of a total power of 600 kW. The solar plant should be able to heat the hall autonomous at a minimum outside temperature of + 2 deg C and a maximum of solar radiation. The collectors are specially designed for air heating with double glazing and a special, black-coated aluminium absorber-sheet. For temperature boosting, the air is circulated from the hall through the collectors and back to the ventilator of the auxiliary heating system. Energy savings are monitored in comparison to an identical reference hall with air heating. Additional business for companies in the ventilating and air conditioning branch. Achievements: The first monitoring campaign covered the period from September 5th 1986 to May 22nd 1987. The installation is functioning without any problems. The monitoring equipment had some problems with auto-starting but functioned well otherwise. The savings are about 5 TOE (approx. 110 kWh/m2) and were calculated to be 22.4 TOE. The solar fraction during the heating period is 20 per cent. The highest output temperature was 69 degree of Celsius. The reference hall consumes 60 per cent more space heating energy than solar hall. Heating period February 3, 1986 - June 2, 1986: Consumption solar building 12,798 liters fuel Consumption reference building 31,177 liters fuel. Fuel savings 18,374 liters fuel Heating period September 1, 1986 - June 10, 1987: Consumption 20,195 litersfuel Consumption reference building 56,956 liters fuel. Fuel savings 36,761 liters fuel.
