Description: Das Projekt "Exzellenzcluster 80 (EXC): Ozean der Zukunft" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel (GEOMAR), Forschungsbereich 2: Marine Biogeochemie, Forschungseinheit Biogeochemische Modellierung durchgeführt. A good representation of primary production is an obvious requirement for predicting oceanic CO2 uptake but heterotrophic processes are equally important in determining net uptake and the time scale of storage in marine carbon pools. Improving the mechanistic basis of the zooplankton formulation in NPZD models offers the potential to reduce model uncertainties far beyond the possibilities of parameter estimation alone, in particular as zooplankton is probably the least understood plankton functional group. Improving the reliability of model predictions is a stated objective of Research Topic A3. Model development will benefit from the results of mesocosm experiments proposed for Research Topic A1 and the model should in turn prove a valuable tool for interpreting the results of these experiments. Calibration will be done in close collaboration with the group of A. Srivastav, who is currently developing improved methods for the optimisation of ecosystem model parameters.
