CCE Status Report 2022

This report describes activities by the Coordination Centre for Effects (CCE) since the CCE was transferred from the Dutch National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) to the German Environment Agency (⁠ UBA ⁠) in 2018. The CCE is the programme centre for the International Cooperative Programme on Modelling and Mapping (ICP M&M) under the Working Group on Effects of the Convention of Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP). The mandate of the CCE is to develop and update methodologies for assessing critical loads (CL), to compile data on CL and to generate maps of CL and their exceedances. Manual on Methodologies and Criteria for Modelling and Mapping Critical Loads and Levels and Air Pollution Effects, Risks, and Trends - Update 2024

This report is an important collection of tools used in the framework of the Geneva Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP). Thus, it provides for example a scientific basis on the application of critical levels and loads, their interrelationships, and the consequences for abatement. After the transfer of the Coordination Center for Effects from the Netherlands to Germany this edition is published by the German Environment Agency (⁠ UBA ⁠). With this edition recent technical updates where transferred in the document. The changes of chapter 3 from the Ammonia-workshop decided 2023 have been incorperated.The information on backgrounddatabase (BGDB) (5.2) and the new receptor map were implemented in chapter 5.6. After the transfer of the Coordination Center for Effects from the Netherlands to Germany this edition is published by the German Environment Agency (⁠ UBA ⁠). With this edition the existing independent manual chapters were transferred into a new continuous document, which is in line with latest layout and accessibility standards of UBA. Review and revision of empirical critical loads of nitrogen for Europe

This report contains the scientific background to the review and revision of the empirical critical loads of nitrogen (CL emp N) that had been established for Europe in 2011 under the ⁠ UNECE ⁠ Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution. This review uses for the first time gradient studies to evaluate and determine the Cl emp N. The results, as presented in Table 1 of the Executive Summary, show that in many cases the outer ranges of the CL emp N have decreased compared to the 2011 values. The outcomes of this report are of major importance for the protection of N-sensitive natural and semi-natural ecosystems across Europe. Critical Loads for terrestrial ecosystems

The exceedance of critical loads is a measure to determine whether current political regulations and actions are sufficient to protect the environment from harmful effects of air pollutants. The pollution of ecosystems was one of the reasons for updating the legally-binding regulations on air pollution control in Europe, e.g. the Directive 2016/2284 on national emission ceilings for certain atmospheric pollutants (NEC Directive) adopted in 2016. Creation of a harmonized land cover map as an example for the entire region of the Geneva Air Pollution Convention

A new map product for calculating the critical loads for eutrophication and acidification of terrestrial ecosystems and for modelling air quality was created in this project. The spatial extent of the map covers a large number of countries in Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. The results of this project are map products representing the land cover in 217 EUNIS classes and 13 RCG classes. In addition to the individual, national application of the data set, a broader use of the data is planned within the framework of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution. Empirical Critical Loads of nitrogen for Europe

This brochure summarizes the revised empirical critical loads for N compared to 2011. 40 % of ecosystems react more sensitively to N than previously assumed. The ecosystems studied have been visualized to make them easier to understand. Two maps show the distribution of natural and semi-natural ecosystems on the one hand and the distribution of forest ecosystems in Europe and the neighboring countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia (⁠ EECCA ⁠) on the other. This brochure was developed as a low-threshold information tool for scientists, but also for politicians and the interested public in the EU and the EECCA countries. Veröffentlicht in Broschüren.

Erfassung, Prognose und Bewertung von Stoffeinträgen und ihren Wirkungen in Deutschland

Unter dem Begriff ⁠ Critical Loads ⁠ sind naturwissenschaftlich begründete Belastungsgrenzen zu verstehen, die für die Wirkung von Luftschadstoffen auf unsere Umwelt ermittelt werden. Die Schutzgüter oder Rezeptoren können ganze Ökosysteme sein oder Teile davon. Als Wert für die Critical Loads wird in quantitativer Abschätzung derjenige Schadstoffeintrag bestimmt, bei dessen Unterschreitung nach derzeitigem Kenntnisstand schädliche Effekte am ausgewählten Schutzgut nicht zu erwarten sind.
