Dimensions of the Impacts of Ecotourism: A Case Study in the Kakum Conservation Area of Ghana

Ensuring local support for protected areas is increasingly viewed as an important element of biodiversity conservation. This is often predicted on the provision of benefits from protected areas, and a common means of providing such benefits is ecotourism development. Ecotourism as defined by Blangy and Wood (1993) is 'responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment and sustains the well-being of local people'. The concept of ecotourism has received much attention in recent years due to its link with sustainable development initiatives, protected area conservation efforts, and regional and community development strategies, particularly in developing countries(Ceballos-Lascurain 1993). In many African countries, the rationale for ecotourism development is primarily economic, from both macro (national) and micro (local) levels. At the macro level, tourism is expected to promote economic growth by generating foreign exchange and increase government revenue while at the micro level, it is expected to facilitate job creation, income and revenue distribution and a balanced regional development which ultimately should improve quality of life of local residents (Sirakaya et. al., 2002). In addition, it is to provide revenue for the creation and maintenance of protected areas (Boo, 1990). Likewise since the late 1980s, tourism (ecotourism) has received considerable promotion in the economic development strategy of Ghana (Sirakaya et. al, 2002) as a response to recent adverse developments in its economy. The rationale is to diversify the economy to reduce its dependence on traditional exports of unprocessed mineral, agricultural and forest products (Teye, 2000) and to facilitate its sustainable development process. In many African countries, the rationale for ecotourism development is primarily economic, from both macro (national) and micro (local) levels. Geochemistry of sediments from Fehmarn Belt area, southern Baltic Sea during cruise EMB238

The geochemical composition of surface sediments and pore waters from the Fehmarn Belt area, southern Baltic Sea, was analyzed in the context of the establishment of exclusion areas for bottom trawling activity. Samples were taken on cruise EMB238 in May/June 2020 using a multi corer or benthic lander device. Besides on-site measurements, further dissolved major and trace elements, dissolved inorganic carbon, nutrients were analyzed in home laboratory. Results are complemented by the analysis of potential microbial gross sulfate reduction rates and the geochemical composition of CNS and extractable sulfur (AVS, CrS(II), and acid-extractable Fe, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn contents.

The iron-snow regime in Fe-FeS cores: a numerical and experimental approach

In the Earth, the dynamo action is strongly linked to core freezing. There is a solid inner core, the growth of which provides a buoyancy flux that drives the dynamo. The buoyancy in this case derives from a difference in composition between the solid inner core and the fluid outer core. In planetary bodies smaller than the Earth, however, this core differentiation process may differ - Fe may precipitate at the core-mantle boundary (CMB) rather than in the center and may fall as iron snow and initially remelt with greater depth. A chemical stable sedimentation zone develops that comprises with time the entire core - at that time a solid inner core starts to grow. The dynamics of this system is not well understood and also whether it can generate a magnetic field or not. The Jovian moon Ganymede, which shows a present-day magnetic dipole field, is a candidate for which such a scenario has been suggested. We plan to study this Fe-snow regime with both a numerical and experimental approach. In the numerical study, we use a 2D/3D thermo-chemical convection model that considers crystallization and sinking of iron crystals together with the dynamics of the liquid core phase (for the 3D case the influence of the rotation of the Fe snow process is further studied). The numerical calculations will be complemented by two series of experiments: (1) investigations in metal alloys by means of X-ray radioscopy, and (2) measurements in transparent analogues by optical techniques. The experiments will examine typical features of the iron snow regime. On the one hand they will serve as a tool to validate the numerical approach and on the other hand they will yield important insight into sub-processes of the iron snow regime, which cannot be accessed within the numerical approach due to their complexity.
