This project is part of the large multidisciplinary CCES project RECORD (Assessment and Modeling of Coupled Ecological and Hydrological Dynamics in the Restored Corridor of the River Thur). It deals with the role of microbial transformations and plant uptake in the cycling of nitrogen in different functional processing zones of a restored section of river Thur. The results will help to gain a better understanding of the filter function of restored river corridors and of their potential to emit greenhouse gases. Main hypothesis: Nitrogen fluxes and transformations in floodplains strongly depend on the specific response of microorganisms and dominant plants in different functional processing zones to the hydrologic conditions that vary with season and flooding events. Objectives: At the example of a restored section of river Thur, we want to gain a better insight into the role of riparian systems as sink or source of nitrogen species and the potential risks for drinking water sources and atmosphere. Specific objectives: - quantify the rates of microbial nitrogen transformations within the model floodplain: comparison between different functional processing zones, temporal variations due to seasonal climatic and biological effects and flooding events, dependence on governing soil parameters (temperature, moisture, redox potential). - quantify the rates of nitrogen species uptake by model plants (Phalaris arundinacea, Salix alba): potential uptake depending on nutrient availability and nutrient balance; effects of plant age and and temporary flooding. - measure and model nitrogen species concentrations in the soil solution and nitrous oxide emissions: comparison between different functional processing zones, temporal variations due to seasonal climatic and biological effects and flooding events. Methods: - Sampling and monitoring plots with a diameter of 8m have been set-up in different functional processing zones: (i) pasture in a neighboring non-restored section, (ii) river-forest transect including weakly colonized gravel, gravel covered by fine over-bank material densely overgrown with reed grass (Phalaris arundinacea) and other herbaceous species, zone planted with willow (Salix alba) during the restoration, mixed deciduous forest dominated by ash, (iii) old riparian willow forest. - Microbial nitrogen transformation rates are determined from soil samples taken from within the plots at specific times. Mineralisation immobilisation turnover (MIT) is determined by isotopic dilution, potential denitrification by acetylen-inhibition incubation. - Specific nitrate and ammonium uptake rates by model plants are determined in hydroponic treatments in the climate chamber. - Soil respiration and trace gas efflux/influx is measured by in-situ gas sampling from within large rings permanently installed on the plots followed by GC analysis. Etc.
The intra-mountain Baza Basin in Southern Spain is the largest of the Late Neogene continental basins of the Betic Cordillera. It provides an up to 2.5 km thick archive of lacustrine and ancillary continental deposits from the Late Miocene to Middle Pleistocene. Infilling of the Baza Basin proceeded mainly by deposition of fine-grained deposits arranged in concentric facies belts in a lake complex. The expansion and contraction of these nested paleoenvironments serve as highly sensitive indicators of climate change which makes the Baza Basin a unique site for an integrated paleoclimate-oriented study of the last 7Ma of SE Europe. The planned LARSEI drilling project (LAcustrine Record of SE Iberia; submitted pre-proposal to ICDP) proposes to drill the Baza evaporitic basin in order to establish a realistic paleo-climatic record through the final Neogene (including the entire Pliocene) that very likely reflects regional events in the western Mediterranean as well as global climate milestones. Prerequisite for the drilling activities is the profound knowledge of the basin structure and local zones of neo-tectonic deformation, mainly related to the Baza fault bounding the basin to the West. We propose to aquire seismic multichannel profiles providing high-resolution images of the basin and related structural units (i.e. faults). The results of these measurements will both help to guide the drilling activities (including drilling site selection; presite study) and to better understand the structure and evolution of the Baza basin.
Objective: The Project ClimateWater is aimed as the first step on the analysis and synthesis of data and information on the likely (known, assumed, expected, modeled, forecasted, predicted, estimated etc.) water related impacts of the changes of the climate with special regard to their risk and to the urgency of getting prepared to combat these changes and their impacts. The Project will identify all adaptation strategies that were developed in Europe and also globally for handling (preventing, eliminating, combating, mitigating) the impacts of global climate changes on water resources and aquatic ecosystems, including all other water related issues of the society and nature. etc.
As element of the cooperation between the Inst. f. Luft- und Raumfahrtsysteme, Techn. Univ. Braunschweig (ILR), and the British Antarctic Survey (HAS) in total three small meteorological flight robots (M2AV) are sent to Halley station. There the fully autonomously operating aircraft (developed at the ILR) are going to measure the turbulent characteristics of the stable atmospheric boundary layer (SBL) above the ice shelf. These in situ measurements are then used to verify, support and complete the already installed BAS sodar systems and the meteorological tower. Main research goal is the fine structure of the SBL especially regarding thin layers, intermittent and fossil turbulence, and (solitary) waves. The use of structure functions, multi-resolution co-spectra and wavelet analysis give information on the spectral characteristics of turbulent structure and transport within the layered SBL. Applying inverse models to the observed data, gradients, divergence and energy fluxes are calculated in order to quantify the turbulent energy transfer between SBL and surface, and between individual layers. Furthermore the horizontal representativeness of the installed remote sensing systems is validated. In the preceding project PSBL a large quality-controlled database from Helipod flights over Arctic sea ice (Polarstern campaigns ARK-XI, ARK-XII and ARK-XIX) was already created. This data base is now used to analyse the resemblance and difference between the SBL over shelf ice (Antarctic) and sea ice (Arctic). The project will contribute to the understanding of specific elements and processes of the SBL particularly under polar conditions. At the beginning of the project all experiments and journals will be already completed. Thus we apply only for man power to analyse the unique data sets from Halley station and M2AVs.
*This project will establish the research facility infrastructure and experimental plots as basis for the work of all projects. The coordination project will be responsible for the overall plot management. The scientific coordinator will not only supervise the technical staff, but participate in research with studying the flora of invading plant species and with investigation on the effect of competition on 48 cultivars of Lolium perenne. The coordination project will also be responsible for data management and statistical support. The data manager will share research by studying the development of plot patterns as they evolve over time in the experimental plots.
