One of the limiting resources in a sustainable economy is surface area on the planet. This can be deduced from the fact, that a sustainable economy must have a distinct solar orientation, since the only real sustainable income in such an economy is solar energy. Any transformation of this income into goods and services must use the resource of area. This is true for direct conversion of solar energy into energy services as well as for the formation of renewable resources, which will form a main base for staple products under sustainable conditions. From this reasoning it is obvious that a measure taking into account the (sustainable) land use attached to goods, services and processes is an important indicator for competitions under conditions of a future, sustainable economy. It is the aim of this project part to develop a measure of sustainability based on area and to apply this measure to regions and processes. On top of that, a methodology to devise a strategy for a bottom-up approach to move towards sustainability on a regional basis will be developed.
