Unlocking the Societal Potential for Change

As humanity navigates the complexities of human-environment interactions, interdisciplinary approaches that integrate psychological insights within the broader environmental discourse are essential for fostering meaningful engagement with sustainability and addressing global environmental concerns. In this publication the authors, who were participants of the “4th Summer School on Environmental Psychology” on Vilm Island in May/June 2023, explore distinct yet interconnected research topics, ranging from climate justice and emotional responses to sustainability strategies, incentives for pro-environmental behavior and the social implications of emerging technologies. In conclusion, these papers show how environmental psychology offers a multifaceted lens through which to examine and address pressing environmental challenges. These insights therefore offer valuable tools on how to further proceed on the United Nations Goal of living in harmony with nature on the global and local level.

Natural Radionuclides in Groundwater (NORM) (WMS)

Considering water as the primary resource necessary for social life, agriculture, industry, and wealth, the importance of groundwater investigation is clear. Apart from many other pollutants, this work focusses on geogenic uranium (U) and radium (Ra), which both stand for natural radionuclides (NORM) that need to be considered frame of groundwater exploration and monitoring programmes due to their specific mobility and chemo-/radiotoxicity. As investigation of U and – to a lesser extent - Ra is done by an increasing number of scientific working groups, the global dataset is improving continuously. In order to give a summarized overview on available and recent literature, scientific papers, reports, and governmental documents have been reviewed for U-238 mass concentrations and Ra-226 and Ra-228 activity concentrations and collected in tables and global maps. Further natural isotopes of U and Ra have been rarely subject of investigation. The collected data were evaluated and interpreted in frame of an associated scientific publication (see citation). From the available data it can be concluded that high geogenic U occur mainly under oxidizing conditions and carbonate rich groundwater, which might be seen as indicator for elevated U concentrations. Certain geological formations, as for example sedimentary, granitic, and volcanic host rocks, promote high U concentrations in groundwater. For geogenic Ra, the search for definite indications proved difficult, since less clear correlation is given for any observed factor. In a global perspective, the most promising evidence for elevated Ra are highly reducing redox conditions, as well as the occurrence of Fe/Mn mineral phases. Furthermore, barite represents a sink for Ra due to its ability to incorporate Ra isotopes. Dissolution of those mineral phases eventually results in co-dissolution of Ra, when Ra is found in host rocks of investigated aquifers, or downstream of such groundwater reservoirs. Furthermore, cation exchange might enhance Ra mobility process, especially in case of sedimentary aquifers with low sorption capacity and/or aquifers with high salinity. Given those chemical requirements for the occurrence of U and Ra, a negative correlation between mother and daughter nuclide can be established. When knowledge on present geological and geochemical constraints is available, elevated U and Ra concentrations might be predictable, as long as anthropogenic influence is excluded.

Veröffentlicht in Scientific Opinion Paper.

Veröffentlicht in Position.

堆肥产品和沼渣的质量保证

Establishing a quality assurance system for compost and digestate from bio-waste can help to decrease the amount of biodegradable waste being landfilled and to increase material recycling. Germany has been successfully operating such a system since 1989, comprising also an organisation with the competence to control the quality of compost and digestate and to award a quality label, the Bundesgütegemeinschaft Kompost e.V. This brochure introduces to the quality assurance system of compost and digestate in Germany in order to give orientation and to share experiences. It provides information, inter alia, on the legal framework related to bio-waste in the EU and in Germany, on involved organisations and on requirements. This brochure is available in English and in Chinese. Veröffentlicht in Broschüren, Scientific Opinion Paper.

Electric bikes get things rolling

Common questions regarding pedelecs involve their potential for sustainable mobility, and, above all, their environmental impacts. This paper provides answers to these queries. A pedelec puts more stress on the environment than a conventional bicycle without an electric motor, but the relatively low environmental impact level of pedelecs is certainly offset when pedelecs are used in lieu of cars for trips. A blind spot in the assessment of POP/PBT/vPvB properties

This paper relates to the assessment of transformation products (i.e. metabolites, degradation or reaction products), which are formed from plant protection products. It addresses a detail in Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009 which is not in line with other substance regulations for REACH , medicinal products, and biocides. Our concern: Also transformation products can be hazardous substances. Meanwhile, they are not yet covered within the POP / PBT /vPvB assessment and the approval criteria for active substances. Our proposal: At least transformation products occurring in a relevant amount should be included in the assessment and the approval criteria in the same way as active substances. How much climate action is offered in the first pillar of the CAP?

This policy paper commissioned by the German Federal Environment Agency examines the greenhouse gas reduction potential from the measures of the first pillar (GAEC standards and eco-schemes) of the Common European Agricultural Policy 2023-2027. The results are based on a study that will be published in the first half of 2022. Veröffentlicht in Fact Sheet.
