Plant wax composition of sediment core ROT21 from the Rotsee, Switzerland

This dataset contains compound-specific hydrogen (δ2H) and carbon (δ13C) isotope compositions and concentrations of long-chain n-alkanes and fatty acids (n-alkanoic acids) from the ROT21 sediment record of Rotsee, Central Switzerland (47°04′10″N, 8°18′48″E, 419 m a.s.l.). Sediment cores were retrieved in October 2021 using a UWITEC gravity corer, and the dataset spans the past ~13,000 years based on 19 radiocarbon dates (terrestrial and aquatic macrofossils) integrated with 210Pb and 137Cs profiles (see De Jonge et al., 2025). Laboratory analyses were conducted between February 2023 and November 2024 at the University of Basel. Sediment samples (~2–5 g) were sub-sampled, freeze-dried, spiked with internal standards (n-C19-alkanoic acid, n-C36-alkane, 2-octadecanone, and n-C21-alkanol), and extracted with dichloromethane/methanol (9:1, v/v) using an Accelerated Solvent Extractor (Dionex ASE 350, Thermo Fisher Scientific). Following saponification, neutral fractions were separated via silica gel chromatography, and fatty acids were converted to fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). Both n-alkanes and FAMEs were further purified to isolate saturated compounds using AgNO3-impregnated silica gel columns, then analyzed and quantified by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Peak areas were normalized to recovery standards to account for potential losses during sample handling, and compounds were identified by comparison with external standards. Compound-specific δ2H and δ13C values were determined by gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-IRMS) and normalized to the VSMOW-SLAP (δ2H) and VPDB (δ13C) scales. Analytical precision was ±3-5 ‰ for δ2H and ±0.2–0.3 ‰ for δ13C. The dataset was generated to reconstruct past hydroclimate and vegetation dynamics in Central Europe using plant wax δ2H records. Full methodological details are provided in the study: Central Europe hydroclimate since the Younger Dryas inferred from vegetation-corrected sedimentary plant wax δ2H values (Santos et al., 2026).

Methods

Observational carbon and nitrogen zooplankton stable isotope and environmental data in the North Atlantic Ocean from 2009-2018

Calanus (copepod) sampled by the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey (https://www.cprsurvey.org/) in the North Atlantic from 2009-2018 were analysed for stable carbon (d13C) and nitrogen (d15N) isotopes. The stable isotope analysis was done by the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) as part of National Environmental Isotope Facility (NEIF). Samples were loaded into an Elementar (Hanau, Germany) Pyrocube elemental analyser, which converted carbon and nitrogen in the samples to carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2) gases. δ13C and δ15N of evolved gases were measured on a Thermo-Fisher-Scientific (Bremen, Germany) Delta XP Plus isotope ratio mass spectrometer. The system was calibrated using laboratory standards and then independently checked for accuracy using USGS 40 glutamic acid reference material (Qi et al., 2003; Coplen et al., 2006). Measurement precision was assessed by running replicates of laboratory standards and resulted in a standard deviation (SD) consistently < 0.1‰ and 0.2‰ for δ13C and δ15N, respectively. This observational dataset was used together with environmental variables (sea surface temperature, mixed layer depth, chlorophyll a, wind speed) to develop Bayesian spatial models and to produce yearly and seasonal isoscapes (spatial modelling of stable isotope ratio) for 1998-2020 (Espinasse 2022).

Gas exchange and isotopic data of Scots pine seedlings exposed to heat and hot drought stress and a recovery phase

The data describes plant gas exchange dynamics and isotopic signatures of respiration, tissues and compounds of Pinus sylvestris seedlings exposed to a control, heat and combined drought-heat treatement as well as a recovery period. The experiment was performed in individual tree chambers in a scientific glasshouse facility at KIT IMK-IFU Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Alternating cold and warm periods particularly in the north Atlantic influence sedimentological signatures, and provoke short detritic sequences called 'Heinrich Events'. Amongst the 11 'Heinrich Events (HE)', which follow one another with a period of 11-12000 years, HE1 was considered part of the Younger Dryas, dated at 11000 years (calendar) approximately. Following new observations, the ages of the HE have been modified, the periodicity proven false, and above all, HE1 has been chronologically separated from the Younger Dryas. It is no longer possible to use the periodicity of 11000 years to predict if an HE0 is still to come or if the Little Ice Age was a reduced expression of such an event. As the mineralogical signatures and the apparent ages of the micas from the Younger Dryas and the HE1 are the same, they are due to the same iceberg invasion up to the 45 degree North parallel. Along the Norwegian coasts, the link between the oceanic and continental Younger Dryas has been made by comparison between dinoflagellate cyst and palynological data. During this period, it turns out that the summer sea temperatures were the same as today, whilst in winter they were much lower following a strong ice covering. The same seasonal contrast is recorded in the records of small lakes. Autochthonous calcite precipitation is unaffected by the 2 per cent drop in 18O. This drop is constant at any altitude in 27 of the lakes analyzed. The drop in the accumulation rates in the Greenland ice sheets, the partial winter icing over of the sea, the presence of icebergs south of the 45th parallel, all agree with larger contrasts in temperature, lower precipitation with more negative 18O values and probably higher snowfall on the continents corresponding to a cold steppes climate recognized by palynologists. Of all the Holocene from Lake Neuchatel, the best defined sequence is that between the Wolf minimum (1300 AD) and 1880-1900 approximately. It corresponds to the Little Ice Age but begins 100 years earlier. Wolf is the break point in mineralogical, geochemical, and isotopic data. From the Roman era until Wolf, 13C values of hypoliminic ostracods and epiliminic calcite show 2 positive and parallel gradients. Other data, calibrated from the total carbon curve show two maxima from the Little Climatic Optimum, broken by the minimum of Oort. In the Little Ice Age, all the gradients are parallel and negative. They are opposite to the gradients from carbonates based on C.min and C.tot. With a diminution in detritus in the sediments and a drop in the isotope ratios in ostracods, and thus a progressive increase in carbonate sedimentation, the isotopic composition of the water became progressively more negative, 18O values evolving in parallel with 13C. Is this due to an increase in primary genetic carbonate production? There is no corresponding increase in organic matter in sediments.
