Development of a modelling system for prediction and regulation of livestock waste pollution in the humid tropics

Introduction: In Malaysia, excessive nutrients from livestock waste management systems are currently released to the environment. Particularly, large amounts of manure from intensive pig production areas are being excreted daily and are not being fully utilised. Alternatively, the excess manure can be applied as an organic fertiliser source in neighbouring cropping systems on the small landholdings of the pig farms to improve soil fertility so that its nutrients will be available for crop uptake instead of being discharged into water streams. Thus, there is a need for better tools to analyse the present situation, to evaluate and monitor alternative livestock production systems and manure management scenarios, and to support farmers in the proper management of manure and fertiliser application. Such tools are essential to quantify, and assess nutrient fluxes, manure quality and content, manure storage and application rate to the land as well as its environmental effects. Several computer models of animal waste management systems to assist producers and authorities are now available. However, it is felt that more development is needed to adopt such models to the humid tropics and conditions of Malaysia and other developing countries in the region. Objectives: The aim is to develop a novel model to evaluate nutrient emission scenarios and the impact of livestock waste at the landscape or regional level in humid tropics. The study will link and improve existing models to evaluate emission of N to the atmosphere, and leaching of nutrients to groundwater and surface water. The simulation outputs of the models will be integrated with a GIS spatial analysis to model the distribution of nutrient emission, leaching and appropriate manure application on neighbouring crop lands and as an information and decision support tool for the relevant users.

Mapping Carbon Pricing Initiatives - developments and prospects

The uncertainty surrounding the future of existing carbon markets in recent years has prevented valuable resources from being channeled to low-carbon investments, particularly from the private sector. Additionally, the prospect of a coordinated international approach to carbon pricing will remain uncertain for several years. However, the report reveals, that regional, national and sub-national carbon pricing initiatives are proliferating. Despite weak international carbon markets, both developed and developing countries are mainstreaming carbon pricing initiatives in national climate change and development strategies. This report prepared by the World Bank together with Ecofys, replaces the State and Trends of the Carbon Market series. Unlike in previous years, the report does not provide a quantitative, transaction-based analysis of the international carbon market as current market conditions invalidate any attempt and interest to undertake such analysis. The development of national and sub-national carbon pricing initiatives in an increasing number of countries calls for a different focus. This report maps existing and emerging carbon pricing initiatives around the world, hence its new title. It analyses common considerations across the initiatives, such as setting the appropriate ambition level, implementing price stabilization mechanisms, using offsets, and taking concrete moves towards linking schemes together. Feel free to watch below webcast by Alyssa Gilbert to familiarise yourself with the main outcomes of the study.

Auswirkungen staatlicher Duerrebewaeltigungsprogramme in Botswana

(FRA)

GovReg: Support to developing countries, 2020-present

This dataset provides data on how much financial, capacity building and technology support the EU Member States and other countries have either planned, committed, or provided to developing countries in relation to climate change mitigation or adaptation. The dataset holds further details on the provided support, e.g., the recipient of support, the financial instrument, the funding source, the concrete projects which benefited or the targeted sector. The Member States submit their data to the European Environment Agency (EEA) via the online platform Reportnet 3. Reporting is mandatory for EU Member States. Some information is only mandatory to report if the data is available. The data is then quality checked by DG CLIMA at the European Commission. DG CLIMA also performs aggregation of the data and combines them with other data sources (European Investment Bank, European Commission). This data is being collected under Article 19 of the Governance Regulation 2018/1999. The Regulation aims to help the EU meet its 2030 climate and energy targets by setting common rules for planning, reporting and monitoring. The Regulation also ensures that EU planning and reporting are synchronised with the ambition cycles under the Paris Agreement. Within the data download, there is an additional document providing detailed statistical metadata information on this dataset.
