Im August 2022 fand ein massives Fischsterben in der Oder statt. Die ersten verendeten Fische auf deutscher Seite der Oder wurden am 09.08.2022 im Bereich Frankfurt (Oder) gemeldet. Neben Fischen verendeten auch andere aquatische Organismen wie Schnecken und Muscheln. Das tatsächliche Ausmaß der Umweltschäden und die langfristigen Auswirkungen auf das Ökosystem können derzeit noch nicht quantifiziert werden. Die Anwendung zeigt bildhaft anhand von Diagrammen die Verläufe der Messwerte der verschiedenen gemessenen Parameter an ausgewählten Messstellen.
The subject of this project was the preparation of substance reports for five substances relevant for building products emissions. For these substances, the toxicological data basis were compiled and evaluated, and EU-LCI values were proposed. The EU-LCI values allow the harmonisation of the health assessment of building products emissions throughout Europe. The EU-LCI Working Group is currently developing a European list of substances and their associated emission limits. The substance reports developed within this project support and accelerate this process. The project outcome is relevant for all stakeholder involved in the topic of building products emissions. The threat posed to drinking water resources by persistent and mobile substances has been recognized for decades. However, for many contaminants, some of which have been detected in drinking water resources for decades, there is still no conclusive assessment of their intrinsic biodegradability in the aquatic environment by the responsible companies. The recommendations are intended to make it easier for a wide range of users, such as water utility laboratories and government agencies with established analytical facilities, to perform a "cold" degradation test in accordance with OECD TG 309 for substances found in their own water resources. The EU Bathing Waters Directive requires Member States to identify popular bathing places in fresh and coastal waters and monitor them for indicators of microbiological pollution (and other substances) throughout the bathing season which runs from May to September
Sensor cell lines have been developed to monitor rapid non-genomic signalling cascades influenced by endocrine-active substances. These in-vitro bioassays were created by genetically modifying G-protein coupled estrogen receptor (GPER1) expressing cells to become artificial fluorescent signalosomes. Both GPER1 agonists and antagonistic compounds were used to characterize the respective sensor cells. The bioassays were then used to screen for potential endocrine-disrupting substances. The project "Dialogues on the appropriate management of substances of concern in the circular economy" aimed to develop a common understanding of the challenges at the interface between chemicals and waste legislation among the stakeholders involved. Furthermore, a current status quo was established on the basis of a literature review. Three workshops were organised as part of the project to address specific aspects of the interface. In view of the advanced development of new specific active pharmaceutical ingredients, the question arises as to whether the established standard procedures for the environmental risk assessment in the context of marketing authorization are still sufficient to adequately cover relevant effects on environmental organisms. The focus of this project is on specific test strategies for substances from the group of oncologicals, cardiologicals and statins, as well as their experimental verification in case studies. Studies with aquatic plants in the Lemna sp. Growth Inhibition Test ( OECD 221), the zebrafish embryo toxicity test (OECD 236) amended with sublethal endpoints and the comet assay with environmentally relevant cell types are discussed as possible adaptations, although not all of them proved to be suitable. Although there is a considerable potential for the recycling of technical plastics from ELV and WEEE in Germany, the status is deficient and targeted measures are needed to develop appropriate capacities. The report provides a comprehensive status quo analysis on the legal framework, material requirements, a description of the most relevant types of plastics as well as interfering and polluting substances during recycling, a detailed account of the use of plastics in electrical and electronic equipment as well as in vehicles, and a detailed description of the existing process chains for the treatment of plastics from the two waste streams. In addition, lab-scale experiments were carried out in which promising approaches were tested. Against this background, separation and recycling strategies were derived and measures and recommendations for action were developed for political as well as economic actors. This study explores the intermediate uses of 53 petroleum and coal stream (PetCo) substances, focusing on 15 marker constituents with properties of concern such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, reprotoxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation, and endocrine disruption. It investigates the potential for these constituents to transfer during intermediate use into the new substance or product and into the environment. Five approaches are employed, including reactivity assessment, literature review, consultation data integration, supply chain interaction analysis, and upstream literature review perspective, to evaluate the likelihood of conversion and assess the potential environmental emission of these constituents. The report presents comprehensive findings that would interest Industry as well as policy stakeholders dealing with PetCo substances, substance management and environmental impact assessment.
